About Tumaini

25 Oct 2008

Tumaini means Hope and she was named as such because she was born just after the death of Ndungutse, the former patriarch of the family, and we were hopeful that the situation would change with the ongoing war in the area.

She is very playful when we visit, both by ourselves or with tourists, and she is always poking her fellow gorillas to make fun of them. We often see her playing with Kayenga and Bageni too.

Tumaini was also the one who took care of Mutazimiza when her mother Lesenjina disappeared on 8 June 2007. We think Lesenjina was probably killed in that same attack that killed Nsekuye. She probably was shot and then hid in a bush and died alone. Her bones are probably still there.
